I think there is some of both. Would the racist element

have turned the tide if they weren't racist? Based on the low victory margins in key states, I would wager yes.

However, I agree that any one of many other factors could have turned the election in Hillary's favor - most in her control.

As an anecdote, I know one person fairly well who told me she would never vote for a black man - ironically, she was an immigrant (legal). I have distanced myself from her, since I just can't take her rants anymore, but to deny that racism influences some voters (and maybe a significant portion) is being unrealistic IMO. Idealistic, but unrealistic.
